The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival or the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, is an ancient traditional festival originating in China. Initially, it was a totemic festival held by the Baiyue tribes in ancient southern China to worship the dragon. Other origins are also suggested, including warding off evil during an inauspicious month and day, summer solstice customs, the tradition of bathing with fragrant herbs, and commemorating Qu Yuan, Wu Zixu, and Cao E.

Dragon Boat Festival folk customs, "zongzi" affection for the Luo people

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival or the Double Fifth Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar each year. It is an ancient folk festival originating in China. Initially, it was a totemic festival held by tribes in the ancient Baiyue region who worshipped dragons. There are also theories suggesting its origins lie in warding off evil months and days, summer solstice customs, bathing with fragrant herbs, and commemorating figures like Qu Yuan, Wu Zixu, and Cao E.

The Dragon Boat Festival, along with the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, is one of China's four major traditional folk festivals. Customs vary widely across different regions, with differences in both content and details. While practices differ, dragon boat racing and eating zongzi are universal customs.

Zongzi, also known as "jiao shu," "zong lie," and "tong zong," has a long history and many variations. "Fragrant mugwort, filling the hall with its scent; peach branches adorn the gate, looking out to see the wheat turning yellow; here's Duanwu, there's Duanwu, everywhere is Duanwu." This is a widely circulated folk song describing the Dragon Boat Festival.

The Luo family's zongzi-making team competition began with a whistle from the referee, with all participants working busily in a tense yet orderly manner...

Ultimately, Chen Mei and Hang Huilan from the pre-processing workshop won the championship, wrapping each zongzi in 12.91 seconds.

Dry land dragon boat racing: In Raoping County, Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province, during the Dragon Boat Festival, people create dragon boats of six colors (pink, brown, green, purple, red, and yellow) using bamboo and paper to perform "dry land dragon boat racing." This takes place from the first to the sixth day of the fifth lunar month, with a procession each day.
