In the workplace, some people believe: I just need to do my job well every day, why do I always have to report my work? Work reporting is just a formality.
In the workplace, some people believe:
I just do my job every day, why do I always have to report my work? Reporting work is just a formality.
Actually, reporting work is not a formality; it is work itself and part of your responsibility. In this lesson, we will share a case with you to explain why you should give a good work report and not wait until your supervisor asks you.
Zhang Bo, who has been working in the company for 4 years, is usually careful and conscientious, and his performance is good. However, he is relatively introverted and not good at speaking, believing that diligently completing his work is the standard for an excellent employee.
Therefore, he has little contact with his supervisor and rarely communicates, making it difficult to gain the supervisor's appreciation.
Unlike Zhang Bo, his colleague Wang Ming loves to communicate with his supervisor, frequently reporting his work—a small report every day and a large report every week. He also proactively submits a monthly work summary.
Therefore, the supervisor is fully aware of Wang Ming's specific actions in his position and his thoughts on his work.

Once, the company received an order from a large client, which the company leadership highly valued and assigned this important task to Zhang Bo's department.
Zhang Bo was very excited, believing he had finally gained his supervisor's appreciation. Unexpectedly, however, at the morning meeting, the supervisor announced that Wang Ming would be the main person in charge, leading the team to complete this task.
Zhang Bo angrily approached his supervisor and asked:
Why is it Wang Ming? His ability is clearly not as good as mine!
The supervisor replied:
Because Wang Ming is proactive in reporting his work, he keeps me informed of his progress. Although his ability is not the strongest, his status is always controllable.
This case is too important; if I assign it to you, it's a complete delegation. But you won't report to me every day, keeping me updated on your progress. That's too risky, and I'm not comfortable with that.
Hearing the supervisor's reply, Zhang Bo walked out of the office dejectedly. Slowly, he seemed to understand something.
From this case, we can see:
Every supervisor hopes that their subordinates will proactively, accurately, and punctually report their work like a clock.
They will only ask you when they can no longer wait for you to proactively report. Therefore, reporting only when your supervisor asks is negligence on your part.

Generally speaking, proactive reporting is needed in the following four situations:
1. When completing a task
Whenever you complete a work task, you should naturally report your work. Otherwise, the leader will think you haven't completed it on time or that it's poorly done.
2. When a task is in progress
Many people mistakenly believe that reporting is unnecessary while executing a task. In fact, providing feedback while executing is the most professional approach.
At each major stage of task execution, promptly providing feedback to your supervisor on the completion status not only allows the supervisor to grasp the work progress but also allows you to receive timely suggestions and assistance.
3. When a task will be delayed
During task execution, whether due to subjective or objective reasons, if the task progress is delayed, you need to promptly report to your supervisor.
This allows for timely correction of the task progress, avoiding negative consequences due to delays.
4. When problems arise in a task
If you encounter thorny problems during task execution, you must promptly report to your supervisor so that the supervisor can help you immediately, preventing serious consequences due to the problems.
